Artist Spotlight: Kalico of MyFolk — Creativity Without Limits

Kalico, an all-around creative from South Georgia and a member of the group MyFolk, represents the kind of artistry that grows naturally from a lifelong connection to music. Raised in a household where music was always present, Kalico’s passion was practically inherited.

“My parents both loved music,” Kalico explains. “My father can sing and performs at weddings or anywhere a song catches his ear. My mother would buy full albums and play them until they wore out or until the next one came out.”

That early exposure shaped Kalico’s musical ear. Even as a kid, he became known for being able to keep up with fast rap songs — especially tracks from Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.

“People would pay attention when they saw I knew all the words,” he laughs. “Honestly, sometimes I didn’t know the words. I just knew the sound. I was kind of saying the words but not really knowing what I was saying. To this day people still ask me, ‘What are they saying?’ on songs they can’t figure out.”

Finding His Voice

Kalico started writing music while still in high school. What began as something to do during free time quickly turned into something much bigger.

After graduating, he moved to Atlanta with hopes of pursuing music seriously. Like many artists chasing a dream, the journey didn’t go exactly as planned.

“I moved to Atlanta right after high school to do music, but I ended up just working and partying,” he says.

During that time, he connected with a producer who was developing artists and needed writers. Kalico began writing songs for those artists, building his experience behind the scenes. However, when the Great Recession hit in 2008, work opportunities disappeared and he was forced to return home.

Still, he didn’t stop creating.

“I came back home with tons of written music — mostly R&B — and a lot of beats the producer let me keep. I just kept writing.”

The Birth of MyFolk

Everything changed when a cousin reached out with an opportunity to record at a local studio. Kalico already had the music ready.

“We recorded three songs and everybody at the studio was feeling them,” he recalls.

Then came the moment that would define the group.

“They asked, ‘What do y’all call your group?’ We weren’t even really a group, but without hesitation I said MyFolk.”

From that moment forward, the name stuck. The collective continued making music together and eventually expanded by adding new members.

A Viral Moment

One of Kalico’s biggest career highlights came with a song titled “Hangover 3.” The track was a playful, party-themed song inspired by nights that resembled the wild chaos of The Hangover series.

“I heard they were making Hangover Part 2, and at the time we were partying just as hard as the movie,” Kalico says.

The song resonated with listeners and quickly gained traction online, eventually reaching over 100,000 views on YouTube.

Challenges of Group Dynamics

Like many music groups, MyFolk faced challenges as members balanced their individual lives with the group’s vision.

“The biggest challenge was dealing with four members in a group,” Kalico explains. “Everybody has their own life and their own views. As an artist you just want to make art, not deal with all the politics and negotiations.”

Despite the obstacles, the group continued creating music together.

A Philosophy That Never Ends

Kalico’s creative mindset is reflected in one of the group’s standout projects, “No Fat Lady.” The title is inspired by the famous saying “It ain’t over until the fat lady sings.”

“In my mind,” Kalico explains, “there is no fat lady.”

In other words, the journey never ends.

What’s Next

Kalico has no plans to slow down.

“I’ll continue doing music as long as I live,” he says.

Right now, he’s focused on promoting the project “P.A.W.S,” which is already available on all streaming platforms.

For Kalico, the goal is simple:

“Just want people to see and enjoy my work.”
