Cheffa Turns a Love Triangle Into Art With Upcoming Album 2K♾️
For more than a decade, Timothy Fobbs Jr., better known as Cheffa, has been quietly building himself into one of the DMV’s most versatile music creatives. Hailing from Laurel, Maryland — a city positioned between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore — Cheffa has never been interested in limiting himself to a single role. Producer, songwriter, recording artist, engineer and mixer, he describes himself simply as a “Super Producer” or a “Jack of all trades.”
Now, after years of developing his craft behind the scenes and working with artists throughout the DMV, Cheffa is preparing to tell a much more personal story through his upcoming album, 2K♾️.
Building a Foundation Through Music
Cheffa’s musical journey began more than a decade ago. Initially self-taught, he released a mixtape titled The First Supper, a project that helped establish the core fan base that continues to support him today. But as he began learning more about the business side of music, he quickly realized that passion alone wasn’t enough to sustain a career.
That realization pushed Cheffa to take his production skills further. After graduating from Full Sail University in 2019, he teamed up with a friend and opened a recording studio in the heart of their city. Cheffa became the studio’s lead engineer, eventually recording a wide range of rappers and musicians coming out of the DMV.
His résumé behind the boards continued to grow, with sessions involving artists such as Migo Lee from Washington, D.C., YG Tech from Baltimore, Big Flock and Pooh Shiesty, among others. Being surrounded by artists, producers and musicians gave Cheffa an opportunity to sharpen his technical abilities while gaining a deeper understanding of what makes a record connect.
From Engineer to Storyteller
Eventually, the studio became more than a place for Cheffa to engineer other artists. It became the environment where he began rebuilding his own catalog.
At a time when much of the music surrounding him centered on similar themes of violence and street life, Cheffa wanted to explore another side of reality — the complicated emotions, relationships and personal situations that people experience behind closed doors.
That direction became especially personal as Cheffa prepared to become a father while navigating an increasingly complicated relationship. Arguments, emotions and unresolved feelings became fuel for his music, creating what he describes as a genuine emotional rollercoaster.
Then came an even more complicated chapter: a love triangle.
The Story Behind 2K♾️
That experience serves as one of the central themes behind 2K♾️, an upcoming album that explores the battle between lust and love, the difficulty of leaving one relationship while developing feelings for someone else, and the consequences that come with trying to balance multiple emotions — and sometimes multiple partners — at once.
One of the first glimpses into that world arrived with Cheffa’s single “In This Muh.” The record explores the mindset of someone attempting to blame their inebriation for leaving one situation behind and entertaining another. Rather than presenting the situation as black and white, Cheffa uses the song to explore the gray areas of temptation, decision-making and accountability.
As summer comes to an end and people begin shifting their attention toward fall, relationships, routines and getting away from the streets, 2K♾️ arrives at an interesting time. Its subject matter speaks directly to people who have found themselves caught between two relationships, juggling multiple partners or struggling to determine whether what they feel is genuine love or simply lust.
But 2K♾️ isn’t intended to simply document Cheffa’s experiences. The album also aims to give listeners perspective. Through the highs, lows, mistakes and emotional confusion, Cheffa wants people caught in similar situations to hear his story and perhaps recognize pieces of themselves in it — while learning how to navigate those situations and make better decisions.
A Career Built Beyond the DMV
Cheffa’s versatility has also taken him beyond the DMV. One of his biggest career highlights came through working with African artist Flavor and acclaimed producer Masterkraft, experiences that he considers significant milestones in his journey and examples of how far his abilities can reach beyond his hometown.
The Challenge of Getting Heard
Ironically, one of Cheffa’s biggest challenges isn’t creating music — it’s getting people to hear it.
Because the creative process comes naturally to him, Cheffa often finds himself finishing one project and immediately moving on to creating the next. Marketing and spending enough time promoting the music he’s already made has been an ongoing challenge.
With 2K♾️, however, he’s approaching things differently.
The personal connection he has to the album has made him determined to market it properly and place it in front of the audience most likely to understand its message. He plans to release another single accompanied by a visual before officially dropping the full project, with the album currently targeted for a late-September release.
Finding His People
Ultimately, Cheffa isn’t chasing a traditional definition of success. His long-term vision is to develop what he describes as a “cult-like” fan base — supporters who genuinely believe in his music enough to advocate for him at shows, to DJs and throughout the wider music industry.
For Cheffa, the goal has always been bigger than simply becoming another recognizable name.
He wants to find his people.
He wants to become a voice for listeners who experience emotions and situations that aren’t always discussed openly. And with 2K♾️, he’s taking one of the most complicated chapters of his own life and turning it into something listeners can hear, relate to and learn from.
After more than a decade of creating, engineering and building behind the scenes, Cheffa is stepping further into the spotlight — not just as a producer or engineer, but as an artist willing to turn his own life into the story.
