Erin Margaret, performing and composing under the name Lumirel, is building an artistic world where intimate piano performance, atmospheric composition, visual storytelling, and elemental imagery come together. A contemporary pianist, composer, and recording artist from a small town in Oregon, Erin is creating music that explores the spaces between light and darkness, classical and contemporary, and struggle and beauty.
A Foundation Built Through Piano
Erin’s relationship with music began at a young age, eventually leading her to pursue piano performance at an intensive level. She completed her bachelor’s degree in piano performance by the age of 20, an accomplishment that came with an unexpected cost. After years of pushing herself creatively and musically, she experienced significant burnout and stepped away from composing and pursuing her own creative work.
A Decade Away From Composition
Although composition became something she left behind, music remained an important part of Erin’s life. For more than 15 years, she has maintained a private piano teaching studio while continuing to develop herself as a pianist and performer. Throughout her career, she has performed in masterclasses and at music conventions, including one particularly memorable experience performing the third movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 with an orchestra.
The Grand Piano That Changed Everything
After nearly a decade away from writing her own music, an unexpected moment brought composition back into Erin’s life: acquiring a grand piano. Something came alive again. Her desire to compose returned with an intensity she hadn’t anticipated, almost as though years of musical ideas had been quietly building beneath the surface, waiting for the right opportunity to emerge.
Discovering Lumirel
That return to composition became the foundation for Lumirel. This time, Erin approached music from a very different perspective. Rather than trying to prove how much she could accomplish or how quickly she could do it, she began focusing on creating work that felt honest, meaningful, and emotionally authentic. Lumirel became a space where she could explore music without placing unnecessary limits on where the creative process needed to go.
Music Inspired by the Elements
One of the defining concepts behind Lumirel is the use of the natural elements as a framework for exploring human emotion. Her first elemental album, Drifting, was inspired by water, while Grounded explored the element of earth. Together, the projects began establishing a larger body of work centered around water, earth, air, and fire, with each element providing a different emotional landscape for the music.
From Water and Earth to Air
The next chapter of the elemental project is already taking shape. Erin is currently working on an album inspired by air, exploring themes of movement, freedom, breath, change, and the feeling of being carried somewhere beyond what can be seen. The upcoming collection represents another evolution of Lumirel while continuing the larger story established through Drifting and Grounded.
Creating Through Life’s Difficult Moments
Erin’s creative journey has also been shaped by significant health challenges, including chronic health limitations. Living with autoimmune and rare genetic diseases has meant that there are times when her body simply cannot do everything she would like it to do. Instead of allowing those limitations to end her creative journey, she has learned to adapt her process and work differently.
Learning That Progress Can Look Different
Music has helped Erin understand that progress does not always have to happen according to the timeline we originally imagine. Sometimes progress means slowing down, changing the way you work, or recognizing the importance of a smaller accomplishment. That perspective has become an important part of her artistic philosophy and has allowed her to continue creating, recording, performing, and developing her career without constantly measuring herself against an impossible standard.
More Than Individual Songs
What makes Lumirel distinctive is the larger world being built around the music. Erin isn’t simply releasing individual piano compositions; she is developing a connected body of work where music, imagery, storytelling, and elemental concepts interact. The result is an artistic project designed to give listeners space to slow down, feel something, and discover their own meaning within the music.
Expanding Beyond Solo Piano
While piano remains at the heart of Lumirel, Erin is beginning to expand the project through collaborations with other instrumentalists and composers. She is also exploring intimate performances and smaller audience gatherings that can create a more personal connection between the artist, the music, and the listener.
Bringing Teaching and Creativity Together
Erin’s work as a piano teacher also continues to play an important role in her musical identity. Recently, she revamped her private music studio to create a more intentional and community-focused environment centered around teaching, musicianship, and creative development. The studio gives her an opportunity to bring together several sides of her musical life while helping others develop their own relationship with music.
The Next Educational Chapter
Another major milestone is approaching as Erin prepares to pursue her Master’s degree through Berklee College of Music. Studying online will allow her to continue building Lumirel while expanding her knowledge in areas such as music production, songwriting, film scoring, and music business. The education will give her additional tools to develop Lumirel and explore creative opportunities beyond traditional piano composition.
Building an Independent Artistic Future
Looking several years ahead, Erin’s goal is to grow Lumirel into a recognizable independent music brand while creating a substantial and evolving body of original work. She envisions Lumirel as a place where music can intersect with visual storytelling, film, live performance, and other creative disciplines.
A Journey Without a Final Destination
Rather than treating Lumirel as a project with a fixed endpoint, Erin sees it as a long-term artistic journey that can continue changing alongside her. From stepping away from composition for nearly a decade to rediscovering her creative voice through a grand piano, her story is ultimately about allowing creativity to return on its own terms.

With Drifting and Grounded establishing the foundation, new music inspired by air and fire on the horizon, classical releases and collaborations ahead, and further education through Berklee approaching, Lumirel is entering an exciting new stage.
