Skip Flanagan: Turning Hustle, Music and Determination Into a Lifelong Journey

For Skip Flanagan of Grass Rootz Records in Houston, Texas, music has never simply been about making songs. It has been about expression, perseverance, entrepreneurship and the willingness to keep pursuing a dream regardless of how difficult the road becomes.

Music Runs in the Family

An entertainer and entrepreneur, Flanagan has built his journey around a simple philosophy: never give up. “I loved music as a kid,” Flanagan explains, pointing to the influence of his family as one of the earliest foundations of his passion. His mother loved music, while his uncle was an entertainer, giving him an early connection to the creative world that would eventually become such an important part of his life.

Making Music That Reflects Society

One of Flanagan’s greatest strengths as an artist is his ability to create music that connects with what is happening in society. Rather than following a formula or simply repeating what other artists are doing, he looks for ways to keep his music relevant and reflective of the world around him. That willingness to be different has become part of his identity.

Success Beyond Music

Flanagan’s accomplishments extend far beyond music. During his college years, he broke the three-point field goal record, adding a significant athletic achievement to his story. He has also been awarded and recognized for his success in the landscaping and fence business, demonstrating the same determination in entrepreneurship that he brings to his creative career.

Making Texas Masonic History

Another notable accomplishment came through his involvement in Texas Masonic history, where Flanagan became the first person in Texas Masonic history to complete the Ashler program.

Building Without a Safety Net

Behind those accomplishments, however, has been a willingness to build without the advantages that many entrepreneurs take for granted. Flanagan says that building a business without traditional support through banking or loans has made the process difficult. Instead of allowing those obstacles to stop him, he has relied on providing quality services and creating value for the people he works with.

Learning the Challenges of the Music Industry

Music has presented its own challenges. While Flanagan’s love for music remains strong, he has learned that the business side of the industry can be complicated, particularly when working with different personalities and expectations among artists and producers. Those experiences have influenced how he approaches collaborations today. “I try to stay away from features,” he says, explaining that he prefers to avoid the potential headaches that can come with certain industry relationships.

The Next Chapter: Hustle 9

Despite the challenges, Flanagan has no plans to step away from music. Currently, he is working on his next album, Hustle 9, a 16-song project that represents another step forward in his development as an artist and producer. The featured song is “Just Like Bricks,” a record that will serve as one of the key pieces of the upcoming project.

Taking the Production to Another Level

Flanagan is also focused on taking his production to another level and expanding the visual side of his music through more videos. He hopes to secure two major features for the album, although the final collaborations will depend on budget. At minimum, he expects to have at least one major feature attached to the project.

Keeping the Passion Alive

For Flanagan, the current state of music presents both opportunities and frustrations. Streaming has been slower than he would like, and he recognizes how directly that can affect the business side of being an independent artist. Still, his love for creating music continues to outweigh those difficulties. “I love music,” he says, making it clear that the passion behind the work remains intact.

A Dream Stage in Houston

Looking ahead, Flanagan has a specific performance goal that represents more than simply stepping onto another stage. His dream is to perform at Houston’s Arena Theatre, particularly because of the venue’s rotating stage and unique atmosphere.

Making the Music Mean Something

He also wants his audience to genuinely know his music. For Flanagan, performing becomes more meaningful when people recognize the songs, connect with the lyrics and participate in the experience. Although he acknowledges that the culture surrounding music and live performances has changed over the years, the dream of performing at the Arena Theatre remains.

A Dream Collaboration With Ronald Isley

There is another collaboration on his wish list as well: recording a song with legendary R&B vocalist Ronald Isley.

The Hustle Continues

As Hustle 9 continues to take shape, Skip Flanagan is entering another chapter defined by the same qualities that have carried him throughout his life: ambition, creativity, resilience and an unwillingness to stop pursuing what he believes in.

From breaking records on the basketball court to building businesses, achieving milestones in his community and continuing to develop his music independently, Flanagan’s journey demonstrates that success does not always follow a straight line.

Sometimes it is built one opportunity, one business decision, one song and one dream at a time.

And for Skip Flanagan, the hustle continues. 🧱
