Summer Lavin: Building a Music Career on Her Own Terms
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — Originally from the Philippines and now based in Los Angeles, independent artist and singer-songwriter Summer Lavin is carving out her own space in music by embracing experimentation, persistence, and the realities of the DIY journey.
Rather than limiting herself to a single genre, Lavin draws inspiration from pop punk, grunge, nu metal, alternative rock, and pop. For her, music is less about fitting into a specific category and more about having the freedom to explore different sounds and turn personal ideas into something authentic.
Finding Confidence Through Live Performance
Before releasing music as a solo artist, Lavin became the vocalist of Code Blue, a Los Angeles-based band made up mostly of nurses. Performing with the group helped her develop the confidence and experience that eventually encouraged her to begin releasing her own music.
Today, Summer Lavin considers one of her biggest accomplishments to be something both simple and deeply personal: taking the ideas in her head, turning them into original songs, and finding the courage to put those songs into the world.
That willingness to create and release music has become a defining part of her journey as Summer Lavin.
Turning Criticism Into Motivation
Like many independent artists, Summer Lavin has faced criticism along the way. She has been told that she “can’t sing,” but rather than allowing those comments to stop her, she decided to keep learning and improving.
Her journey has also required creativity far beyond songwriting and performing. Lavin collaborates long-distance with her cousin in the Philippines while recording her vocals from her bedroom in Los Angeles. When an earthquake damaged her cousin’s home and studio, he temporarily moved his setup to a chapel so they could continue making music together.
The experience reinforced something Lavin had already begun to understand: creating music does not require perfect circumstances.
“You don’t need perfect circumstances or everyone’s approval to keep creating” is a lesson that has become central to her approach as an artist.
The Heart of the DIY Journey
For Summer Lavin, being a DIY artist means balancing music with everyday responsibilities, working with limited resources, navigating criticism, and finding ways to keep creating regardless of the obstacles.
Her story represents the less glamorous side of becoming an independent artist—the bedroom recordings, long-distance collaborations, unconventional workspaces, self-doubt, and persistence that often exist behind the finished song.
Rather than waiting for everything to be perfect, Summer Lavin continues to build with what she has.
