Born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Beck relocated to Los Angeles at just 16 years old, where he would spend the next 20 years immersed in one of the most influential underground music movements of the early 2000s. Today, he calls Brooklyn, New York home, continuing to evolve creatively while expanding into education, visual media, music direction, and production.
Early Beginnings
Long before electronic music production became widely accessible, Beck was already developing his craft. After growing up playing alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and bass guitar, he discovered samplers and sequencers at the age of 12. That early fascination with technology and musicianship became the foundation for a career built on innovation rather than imitation.
Before releasing music as Thavius Beck, he performed under the name Adlib and helped establish the influential hip-hop collective Global Phlowtations, contributing to the rise of Los Angeles’ underground hip-hop culture.
A Pioneer of the LA Beat Scene
As the city’s legendary beat scene emerged, Beck became one of its defining contributors, regularly performing at the iconic Low End Theory club—an institution that helped shape modern instrumental hip-hop and electronic beat culture. He appeared on the venue’s very first promotional flyer and would go on to perform there more than ten times, sharing space within a community that attracted artists including Erykah Badu and Thom Yorke.
His career continued gaining momentum after signing with Mush Records in 2003, where he released acclaimed projects including Decomposition, THRU, Dialogue, and several EPs. Throughout the years, Beck has collaborated with and produced official remixes for an impressive roster of artists, including Saul Williams, Zack de la Rocha, Nas, Trent Reznor, Cedric Bixler-Zavala of The Mars Volta, Ras Kass, and Skylar Grey.
Beyond the Studio
Beyond the studio, Beck has also served as Music Director for both Saul Williams and Skylar Grey, demonstrating a versatility that extends far beyond production alone.
Education has become another defining chapter of Beck’s career. As an Ableton Certified Trainer since 2009 and a Bitwig Certified Trainer since 2015, he has spent more than 15 years teaching production through workshops, tutorials, and higher education. He also became the first full-time professor hired at BerkleeNYC, helping shape the next generation of producers and musicians while sharing the knowledge earned through decades of professional experience.
His résumé continues to expand through film scoring, commercial licensing, and multimedia projects, proving that his creativity isn’t confined to one lane. That willingness to constantly evolve has become one of his greatest strengths.

Ironically, one of the biggest lessons came during his years as a salaried professor. While many artists chase security, Beck discovered that uncertainty often fuels his creativity. The constant pursuit of new opportunities, collaborations, and ideas keeps him inspired, while comfort can sometimes lead to creative stagnation. Rather than fearing the unknown, he has learned to embrace it as the environment where his best work is born.
