Nick Lacey Is Bringing “Girly Pop Rap” Into Its Own Lane
There’s something refreshing about an artist who isn’t trying to fit the mold. While most rappers lean into tough personas and recycled flex culture, New Jersey artist Nick Lacey is building a sound that feels completely his own — honest, self-aware, funny, melodic, and unapologetically different.
Hailing from Keansburg, Nick describes himself as “a rapper with a little pop sound,” but that description barely scratches the surface. His music blends catchy hooks, personal storytelling, internet humor, and everyday life references that most artists would never dare put in a rap song. Bath & Body Works runs, binge-watching High School Musical, ordering DoorDash — somehow Nick turns all of it into music that feels relatable and addictive.
“I rap about what I actually do,” Nick explains. “It’s not typical rappy rap songs. I’m lowkey a girly pop who raps.”
That authenticity is exactly what makes him stand out.
Music was practically built into Nick’s upbringing. His father played in a band, his brother played guitar, and creativity surrounded him from an early age. By freshman year of high school, Nick had already started experimenting with making music himself. After spending money on a couple studio sessions, he realized he could teach himself the process instead.
“I went to a studio twice and it was like $20 each time,” he says. “I thought, ‘I could probably just figure this out myself.’”
So he bought a microphone, grabbed a laptop, and learned everything independently — recording, mixing, and creating his own sound from the ground up. That DIY mentality became a major part of his artistry and helped shape the raw, unfiltered energy fans connect with today.
Most memorable moment
One of the coolest moments in Nick’s journey came from his song “Danny Tanner.” Before legendary actor and comedian Bob Saget passed away, he actually reposted the track himself — a surreal co-sign that Nick still remembers as a standout moment in his career.
Even with growing attention, Nick keeps his approach simple. He admits the biggest obstacle he faces is occasional writer’s block, but beyond that, he’s focused on enjoying the process and continuing to evolve creatively.
what’s next
Right now, Nick is pushing his EP, I Got Off The Plane, while working on another upcoming project. Before the next EP arrives, fans can expect a string of new singles that continue expanding his unique style and personality.
Long-term, Nick has his eyes set on something bigger: performing at the legendary Stone Pony Summer Stage. For a New Jersey artist, it’s more than just a venue — it’s a landmark moment.
As music becomes increasingly oversaturated with artists chasing trends, Nick Lacey is proof that individuality still matters. He isn’t trying to be the toughest rapper in the room. He’s making music that sounds like his actual life — awkward moments, pop culture obsessions, humor, vulnerability, and all.
And that honesty might be exactly what makes people keep listening.
